Forward, And, In the Dark features Rosen’s monotypes, collages, and paintings created from the materials and the tools that lead the creative, problem-solving process. That is, there are no studio still lifes, thumbnail sketches or studies—and barely a reference object or photo. He uses a plethora of materials in novel ways: from silkscreen ink for painting to Sumi-e brush on a gel plate that resists the ink. Rosen builds each work with layers of applications. He attempts to sustain fluidity and opportunism, puzzling over each added layer of color, and analyzing every hit-and-miss after each addition.
